Win! The Invisible Woman by Claire Tomalin

21st Feb 2014

The Invisible Woman Claire TOmalin
Claire Tomalin's book about Nelly Ternan, actress and the lover of Charles Dickens, is what rescued her from an airbrushing from history. It's now a film, directed by and starring Ralph Fiennes. To celebrate, we've got five copies up for grabs...

Tomalin is well known for resurrecting previously forgotten women from the dusty pages of male-written history – her biography of Mary Wollstonecraft is what brought the activist 20th-century recognition.

In The Invisible Woman, she turned her attentions to Nelly Turnan, a professional actress who was 18 years old when she met Dickens, then a literary sensation in his mid forties, married and with a brood of ten children.

The two began a love affair which provided the straight-laced Dickens with an exciting, vivacious muse, and the vital young Turnan with a life of invisibility.

Ralph Fiennes directs and stars in the adaptation of Tomalin’s book, which is released nationwide on the 21st February. To celebrate, we’ve got five copies of the book to give away.
