4th Feb 2013

We’re getting involved with their IWD book club campaign, which will see book clubs across the UK and beyond reading and sharing stories (accompanied by booze and cake a-go-go of course), to raise awareness and donations towards Womankind Worldwide’s work.

The story we’ll be discussing is The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and our book club will take place at The Three Minute Theatre in Manchester city centre, at 1.30pm on Saturday 9th March.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s famous short story is a haunting gothic tale, as relevant, important and powerful today as when it was first published...A landmark feminist text now renowned for its representation of women’s roles and mental health in the 19th century, Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s famous short story is a haunting gothic tale which remains as relevant, important and powerful today as when it was first published over a century ago.

It’s only 6,000 words and available for free online, so you’ll still be able to join in even if time and pennies are tight. And if you do want to get your a copy of your own, you can find collections of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s stories, including The Yellow Wallpaper, from Foyles, Amazon, or your local independent bookseller.

The event is free, though we will be collecting donations for Womankind Worldwide, and all genders are welcome. Want to be kept up to date? RSVP to the Facebook event.

If you can’t make it, you can always get involved in the Womankind Worldwide IWD book club campaign by organising your own event. They’ve got lots more information on the website, including recommended reads from Bidisha, Sarah Waters, Kate Mosse and more.

See you soon!

Wish I could go. I loved The Yellow Wallpaper when I read it for a class in college and would like the opportunity to discuss this again.
