Costa Awards Carol Ann Duffy and Announces New Short Story Prize

17th Jul 2012

Carol Ann Duffy

Carol Ann Duffy has scooped two awards in one week: the Pen Pinter Prize  and the 2011 Costa Poetry Prize  for her delicious collection, The Bees  (her first since becoming Poet Laureate in 2009).

Bees as a symbol of grace and sustenance run through the collection which range from poems of love, anger, mourning and plenty in between.

The next stage of the competition (which, let’s face it, must be a very strange judging process) pit winners of all the categories (Children’s Book, Novel, First Novel, Poetry and Biography) against one another in the race to win the overall Costa Book of the Year.

Also announced from Costa is a brand new prize, the Short Story Award. It will be distinct to the others in the running for the Book of the Year and awarded for a single, previously unpublished short story of up to 4,000 words.

A short-list of six stories will be selected by a panel of judges and the winner of the £3,500 prize will then be chosen by a public vote in November 2012. Entries can be submitted until Friday 7th September.

What do you think of this years’ Costa winners? Who’s your money on for the overall winner?
