Call for Submissions: 2012 Asham Award

22nd Jun 2012

Typewriter

This year’s Asham Award is open for business. The annual short story competition for women is open to writers who have not yet had a novel or story collection published.

The chosen theme for the 2012 edition is ‘Journey’ and the judges are (appropriately) travel writer, Sara Wheeler, novelist Helen Dunmore and Virago’s Lennie Goodings.

The shortlist will be announced early next year and winner will receive £2,700 and be invited to Small Wonder – the literary festival dedicated to the short story in Charleston, East Sussex.

The award is again teaming up with Virago, who will be publishing the winning entry in an anthology of specially-commissioned stories, along with a classic from the archives (this year, one from Angela Carter).

Check out last year’s anthology of ghost stories, Something Was There,  and submit your story of up to 4,000 words by September 21st.  Click here to download your entry form.

Need some inspiration? Have a look at some of our favourite short story anthologies before you start scribbling.
