And Finally…
Everyone’s talking about…
Orange withdrawing sponsorship of the Orange Prize for Fiction. After 17 years of sponsoring the prize, which celebrates the work of women writers, Orange have decided to focus on partnerships within the UK film industry (they are currently headline sponsor of the Bafta film awards).
Kate Mosse, who co-founded the award, assures supporters that this is not the end for the Women’s Prize for Fiction: “This is an end of an era but no arts project should stand still and we are now looking forward to developing the prize with a new partner.” This year’s winner will be announced at a ceremony on 30th May, receiving a cheque for £30,000 and ‘Bessie’ statue.

I don’t know about you, but we’ve spent a lot of the week donning oversized sunglasses and trying to find excuses to lounge in the sun with a book and ice cold G&T. Hello Summer!
When not skiving in the sunshine, we spoke to Leah Hager Cohen, pondered the rise of fantasy fiction, celebrated amazing and adventurous women and longed for a literary escape to the Lake District (with books and an ice cold G&T? There’s a theme developing…).
We also featured another beautiful Alice in Wonderland tattoo and are on the look out for more contributions to our Tattoo Tuesday series. Do you have ink inspired by a favourite book, quotation or author? Let us have a peek!
In other news…
On Wednesday 30th May, we’ll be heading to Manchester’s International Anthony Burgess Foundation for the Lung Jazz Book Launch. This is the Northern leg of the launches organised by Cinnamon Press for an anthology that showcases some of the best young poets writing and performing today. All proceeds from the book go to Oxfam, and the poets reading at Wednesday’s event include Helen Mort, Claire Trévien and Lindsey Holland.
With the festival season looming, we were excited to hear that Ilkley Lit Festival is recruiting! With paid opportunities for Volunteer Coordinator, Box Office Administrator, Festival Assistant and Stage Manager roles, this is a great chance to experience working for a literary festival that features 200+ events over 17 days.
