Five-Minute Friday: Sorrell Waldie
Day job: Bookseller
Extra Curricular: Musics with No Plato, doing my weirdy animal blog (Jaded Animals), making fudge, taking photographs of lost items. I also like ships (especially Brigs of War)
Favourite book of all time: This is too difficult! Erm, probably Wuthering Heights.
Literary pet peeves: Naff chick-lit. The idea that I should be bothered about what coloured fictional shoes to wear or fictional diets. And ghostwriting for celebs (e.g., Katie Price). And use of the word ‘rollicking’ in books reviews – “a rollicking good read” – because no one ever uses it in any other situation.
Guilty pleasure: Recently, historical fantasy. I’ve been enjoying A Games of Thrones (which has zombies, added bonus!) and Gormenghast but hiding the covers. They are really great escapist books and like big sprawling soap operas in other worlds, but I still can’t get away from my pre-conception that they are boring.
Three favourite authors: Jeanette Winterson, Haruki Murakami, Garth Ennis
Favourite fictional character: It’s a real toss-up between Domino from X-Men spin-off X-Force because she’s just awesome, or Lord Henry Wootton from The Picture of Dorian Gray. They are both witty bastards.
Other recommended reading: A Fraction of the Whole by Steve Toltz, The End of Mr Y by Scarlett Thomas, and I’m in the middle of Social Animals by David Brooks which is non-fiction but uses a fictional narrative and is fascinating!
