Day job: Account Executive
Favourite book of all time: I think my tastes have changed dramatically so books I consider favourites might, on revisiting, not have the same impact on me these days, but certainly Crime and Punishment is the first book to have made me cry (the dream sequence with the horse). Russian authors have a unique way of provoking emotion in a reader, often disdain, it’s very powerful.
Literary pet peeves: I once read a book that was so awful in every possible way that I had to keep reading aloud to my friend to check that I wasn’t missing the point; I mean, was it so terrible on purpose? Was I missing some comical irony? Bad books get published whilst some wonderful literary works are knocked back at every turn, that’s the only peeve I have.
Guilty pleasure: I love children’s books or comics with a dark undertone, Struwwelpeter, or much further up the guilty end of the spectrum, Doraemon – the Japanese comic strip series about a robot cat from the future
Three favourite authors: Richard Yates, Paul Auster, Nabokov
Favourite fictional character: It’s probably Ignatius J Reilly (A Confederacy of Dunces) although Misha the penguin from Death and the Penguin, was so hopeless a little thing that I feel like she deserves a mention
Other recommended reading: Stone Junction by Jim Dodge, The Best of Everything by Rona Jaffe, Geek Love by Katherine Dunn and, perhaps another guilty pleasure, My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell.
