Introducing the For Books’ Sake Book Club

For Books' Sake Presents Lit at Ladyfest TenBagsy us some comfy armchairs and perhaps a big glass of booze: For Books’ Sake is introducing its very own book club. We spend so much time gabbing about our most beloved books, that it seemed only polite to let you have your say too.

Our first book will be the appropriately-titled Girl Reading by Katie Ward. Published by Virago earlier this year, it features seven chronological episodes that take the reader from medieval Siena through 1600s Amsterdam to present-day Shoreditch and beyond, each one imagining the narrative context to seven real-life portraits of women reading.

Want to get involved? We’ll be meeting in London at the end of the month, so check back here next week for the confirmed venue and date. Not nearby enough for that? We’ve got all sorts of other ways you can still take part. On our For Books’ Sake Forum, we’ve set up the For Books’ Sake Book Club group.

Sign up and tell us your thoughts about the book, what topics we should be nattering about, and any suggestions for books you’d like to nominate for next time. During the book club itself, we’ll have a Twitter hashtag you can use to follow what’s being said and contribute your own ideas and arguments.

We’ll also do a little write-up afterwards with what was said on the night. So even if you couldn’t be there, there’ll still be lots of opportunities to chime in with your thoughts and continue the conversation…

Need to get your mitts on a copy of Girl Reading? You can buy it in paperback  from Foyles for £12.99, for £9.09 from Amazon, or get the Kindle edition for £5.99.

Finally! A book club I want to join. Do let me know if there’s one in Manchester, and I’ll do my best to be there.

We’ll be doing it digitally for the people who can’t make the London one, and we’ve got plans in the works for a real-life Manchester edition later this year! We’ll keep you posted…

Awesome! Getting very excited for this and have started scouring local charity shops for possible reads. If anyone has any recommends then shove them on the forum!

Great news! And even better that there are plans afoot for a Manchester one too. Cant wait.

Our very friendly informal book group meets on the third Sunday of every month, at 5 ish in Arcadia in Headingley. Leeds Feminist Network (best contacted through facebook) also runs a book club that reads feminist classics.
If anyone feels the need for a book club in Leeds that focuses on the work of women authors only, more than happy to facilitate that :)

  6. Sarah says:

Will it be at a weekend? I can make London but not on weekdays …

  7. Francesca says:

I love booze. And books. Sign me up!

What do you think?
