And Finally…

Feeling somewhat fatigued after yet another five-day week? (We suspect we might have all too easily gotten into the swing of all those long bank holiday weekends…) Here’s some links to help you while away the last few hours of the working week. We won’t tell anyone if you won’t:
Everyone’s talking about…
The film adaptation for Lionel Shriver‘s controversial modern classic, We Need to Talk About Kevin, débuted at Cannes this week, and already the media is all a-twitter with an assortment of reactions, commentary and analysis. Head here for the verdict from The Guardian‘s Xan Brooks, plus other responses to the film.
News you might have missed…
It’s the last day of Lyric 2011, the inaugural Festival of Word and Music from the University of Sheffield. There’s all sorts of shenanigans happening this evening for the festival’s finale, and although all but two of the featured authors are male, you can catch Helen Mort reading her poetry tonight with Don Paterson – and it’s free! Head here for more info.
Over in Manchester, it’s the Victoria Baths Fanzine Convention this weekend, and then next weekend we’ll be rocking Chorlton Arts Festival with a night of Books & Blues. It’s free, and we’ll be celebrating famous and forgotten female voices in blues with music, spoken word and prizes a-go-go. More details about that here.
In other news…
We’re loving this feature by Dorian Lynskey, author of 33 Revolutions Per Minute: A History of Protest Songs, on the visibility of women. A fascinating read, and as a cheeky bonus, the post comes complete with fifteen fab feminist protest songs too. Perfect to power you through the rest of the afternoon…
