Christmas Gift Guide: Zombies
There’s nothing cooler at the moment than the walking dead: Zombies, whether they are red-eyed and raging or dragging tattered limbs at a sluggish pace, have refused to lie down and die (pipe down at the back Vampire fans, your own gift guide will follow tomorrow!). Maybe it’s because zombies represent a primal preoccupation with death, or because they allow us to explore our fears about biological warfare and a world in chaos; maybe it’s because we like nothing better than to speculate who will survive and who will fall when the apocalypse comes. Will you be a survivor?
Dr Dale’s Zombie Dictionary: The A-Z Guide to Staying Alive is surely a good place to start! Keep this in your army surplus rucksack along with The Official Zombie Handbook (UK) and you’ll have a headstart on those chumps who’d rather save the dog than grab some tins and a swiss army knife. Of course, if you like your survival plans to be a bit more decorative and organised, there’s a nifty Zombie Survival Guide 2011 Calendar for just £9.99.
You might have noticed the TV turning a little grey and drooly round the edges recently, with AMC’s successful 6 part adaptation of The Walking Dead. Apparently, it’s got the go ahead for a second series, so a dvd release can’t be far behind. But whilst you’re waiting, there’s a whole load of graphic goodness to be had with Robert Kirkman‘s comic books, running since 2003. The Walking Dead Compendium: Volume 1 brings together volumes 1-8 of the trade paperback, and is currently only £26.05 on Amazon.
A cult favourite on the comic book scene is Deadworld, illustrated by Vince Locke and released via Desperado Publishing. Team that up with a Romero Dead Trilogy dvd boxset and you’ve got the perfect Christmas afternoon of cult corpses.
And if all these thoughts of running from the undead, hiding out and surviving on whatever you can leaves you feeling a bit downhearted and peckish, cheer (and fill) yourself with some amazing Zombie Cupcakes!
