John Waters at the Southbank Centre
While our main focus these days is women authors, we still have one hell of a soft spot for the almighty John Waters. After all, what’s not to love about the sleaze-obsessed multi-talented moustachioed man who brought us Hairspray, Cry Baby, Female Trouble and A Dirty Shame among many more, starring everyone from Johnny Knoxville to Johnny Depp via Traci Lords and Iggy Pop?
Although normally far more shy and retiring than you’d expect from his films, the cult film-maker, artist and author is making a handful of rare live appearances in London next week to promote his new book, Role Models.
He’ll be in conversation with Phillip Hoare during a talk at the Southbank Centre next Friday 3rd December. Then, the following day, Saturday 4th December, he’ll be autographing copies of the book during a signing at Waterstones Piccadilly.
And if all that weren’t enough, then on Friday 10th November there’s a John Waters double-bill happening close to Oxford Circus, including “low-brow entertainment, mince pies, and DJs playing John Waters soundtracks til 3am.” See you there!

Thanks for writing about this… I can’t wait!
While he’s not a woman, I think it’s worth noting that Mr Waters has always brought us strong female characters… Tracey Turnblad and Dawn Davenport are my personal favourites!
