Limited Edition Puffin Designer Classics

The Secret Garden Lauren Child Cover Puffin 70th Anniversary Edition

It isn’t practical in the slightest, but I’m still smitten by this limited edition of Frances Hodgson Burnett‘s children’s classic, The Secret Garden. Part of the brand new Puffin Designer Classics series to celebrate the children’s publishers 70th anniversary, Puffin have teamed up with a total of six designers, artists and style icons. From an Orla Kiely cover for Louisa M. Alcott‘s Little Women to cover art for Oliver Twist designed by Sir Peter Blake, it’s a varied range, but my favourite has to be this pop-up papercut design by Lauren Child, creator of the award-winning Charlie & Lola series.

The editions will be available to buy tomorrow. They’ll be priced at £100 each on the Puffin website, but you can wangle them from Amazon from £75. And whilst that might sound expensive for a book you probably owned several battered and scribbled-on copies of when you were a whipper-snapper, think of it as an investment in an artwork by an iconic designer, and the price tag suddenly seems much less steep. Or at least, that’s the excuse I’ll be using when I get a slapped wrist and stern talking-to from my bank manager…

Oh, I love the secret garden & this edition is just delightful! £100 though? Maybe I’ll make my own cover for my old battered copy… now, where did I put the cellotape?

Thanks for the comment Natalie, we definitely winced a bit when we saw the price tag! But if you love those designers I suppose £70-£100 is not much for one of their artworks. A DIY version sounds much more pleasing to the bank balance though!

I want/need/adore the Orla Kiely covered Little Women, better get saving up!

  3. I totally covet this book! It’s a favourite read anyway, and the cover is brilliantly done by the wonderful Lauren. I wish I had even a tiny bit of her creativity, but if I save up at least I can bag the book.
